Alice Velde-Herrick

Alice Velde-Herrick, 96, of Breckenridge , MN , died August 19, 2009 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge.



Her funeral will be Monday, August 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Breckenridge Lutheran Church , Breckenridge , MN , with Pastor Mark Manning officiating.



Visitation will be Sunday, August 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge , MN ; and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.



Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery , Breckenridge , MN .



Alice Marie Max was born May 24, 1913 to August and Anna (Raher) Max at her parent’s home in Meadows Township, rural Rothsay, MN, the youngest of eight children. She attended country school in that area.



Alice was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.



As a young woman she worked in Chicago for a short time as a nanny, and then returned to the Breckenridge area and worked as a housekeeper.



Alice married Torben Velde on September 20, 1944. They farmed in the Henning, MN area, and then moved to a farm north of Foxhome , MN . A baby girl, Karen Corrine was still-born November 18, 1949. Torben and Alice moved to Breckenridge in the spring of 1960. Alice began working in the dietary department at St. Francis Nursing Home where she worked for 14 years, retiring in 1974. She was an excellent cook. Torben preceded her in death on May 24, 1967.



Alice married Milton M. Herrick on October 8, 1973. Together they were charter members of the Breckenridge Senior Citizens Center and were very active for many years. They also belonged to the square dancing group. Alice and Milton moved to Park Manor in September, 1997. Milton preceded her in death February 8, 1998.



Alice continued to live at Park Manor until September, 2006, when she moved to the Leach Home. Due to health issues, she became a resident at St. Francis Nursing Home in May, 2007, where she has since resided.



Alice was a member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church . She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, dancing, Bingo, playing cards, music and listening to tapes.



Alice was the last member of that generation of the Max family.



She is survived by nephews: Donald (Alice) Baker, Kenneth (Pat) Baker, Russel (Joan) Jacobs, Dale (Judy) Wood, Darrel Wood, David (Carol) Wood, and Duane Wood; Nieces: Doris Bezenek, Delores (Duane) Enkers, Dorothy (Mike) Krause, Donna (Leo) Matteson, Della (Arnie) Peterson, Verna Pratt, Myrtle Styf; Several great nieces and great nephews; Step-daughters: Doris Pekas and family, Marion Fiedler and family; Step-sons: Milton Jr. (Aldy) Herrick and family and John (Jane) Herrick.



She was preceded in death by her parents: August and Anna Max; Her infant daughter: Karen Corrine Velde; Her first husband: Torben Velde; Her second husband: Milton Herrick; Her sisters: Caroline Ferguson, Emma Jacobs, Elsie Max, Johanna Max, Louise Baker and Ann Wood; Her infant brother: Otto Max; Nephews: Willis Ferguson, Arlin Ferguson, Dennis Wood.
