Upon returning home, Al was united in marriage to Maurine "Pat" Peterson on September 5, 1947 in Webster, SD. After working various jobs, they moved to Campbell, MN in 1951, where he was co-owner of Campbell Grain Company until it was destroyed by fire. He was then manager of the Kent-Doran Grain Company for several years.

While Al was living in Campbell, he was a member of Agate Masonic Lodge #167 and a past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Zurah Shrine Temple of Minneapolis, and the Fraternal Order of the Elks, Wahpeton, ND. His spare time was often spent with his horses, which he loved caring for and riding. He was also a member of the local saddle club.

In 1973, Al and Pat moved to Moorhead, MN, where he managed a co-op grain elevator. In 1978, they moved to Felton, MN, where Al was already manager of the Felton Farmer's Co-op Elevator. There, he joined the VFW in Ada. He worked in Felton until his retirement.

In 1997, Al lost his wife of almost 50 years. He then moved to Breckenridge to be closer to his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
