Bertha Johnson

June 4, 1907 — April 9, 2005

Bertha A. Johnson, 97, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN. Services will be held on Friday, April 15, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church of Rural Eden, South Dakota with Pastor Lynn Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 14, 2005 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home and also two hours prior to the service at the church.



Bertha is survived by her 3 daughters and 2 sons: Bernice (Herb) Rowland, Fountain Inn, SC, Leonard (Norma) Johnson, Eden, SD, Eunice Kroulik, Minneapolis, MN, Esther Monk, Fergus Falls, MN, Edward (Daisy) Johnson, Pioneer Town, CA; her 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Nora Jacobson, Sioux Falls, SD.



Bertha is preceded by her parents, John and Rosetta Peterson; her husband, Lawrence Johnson; her 3 daughters, Barbara and twin daughters that were stillborn; her 3 sons, Everett, Evan and a son that was stillborn; her 3 sisters, Mabel, Clara and Alice; her 5 brothers, Eugene, Stanley, Norris, Roy and a brother in infancy; her 2 sons-in-law, Harold Monk and William Kroulik; her 3 grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.



Bertha was born June 4, 1907, at Buffalo Lake Township in Marshall County, near Eden,

South Dakota, the daughter of John and Rosetta (Gilbertson) Peterson. She grew up and attended school there, then worked outside the home caring for neighbor?s children. On March 19, 1929, Bertha was married to Lawrence Johnson in South Dakota. They lived near Eden and Peever, where they raised cattle. Lawrence preceded her in death in 1998. After his death, Bertha continued to live in Sisseton, SD, until her health failed. In February, 2000, Bertha became a resident at St. Francis Home in Breckenridge, MN. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and loved to dance.
