Carl Schmitt, 95, Fargo, ND, formerly Breckenridge, MN died October 12, 2006 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo. His Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 16, 2006 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Breckenridge. Fr. Richard Walz will officiate. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 15, 2006 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM and Prayer Service at 7:00 PM

at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation on Monday morning at the funeral home beginning at 8:30 AM until the time of the funeral. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton, ND.

Carl is survived by: His 2 daughters: Mary (Bob) Lawrence, Fargo, ND; and Jane (John) Kadlec, Minneapolis, MN. His daughter-in-law: Susan Schmitt, Anthem, AZ; His 9 grandchildren: Lisa, Jennifer and Cristina Lawrence; Andrew and Rebecca Eccleston; Debi (Dan) Collier, Michael Schmitt, Matthew Schmitt and Aimee (James) Sullivan; His 3 great-grandchildren; His sister-in-law: Leona Lev, Golden Valley, MN.

He was preceded in death by: His parents: Peter and Mary Schmitt; His wife: Alice; His son: Frank; His son-in-law: Edward Eccleston; His 2 brothers: Henry and Arnold; His sisters: Gertrude, Hilary, MaryAnn, Loretta and Sophia

Carl was born August 24, 1911 in Wahpeton, ND, the son of Peter and Mary (Ridder) Schmitt. He grew up in Wahpeton and attended school at St. John's, graduating from St. John's High School in 1929. Following graduation, Carl worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in various locations. On June 4, 1940, Carl was united in marriage to Alice Lev at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. They lived in Wahpeton and later moved to Minneapolis, where Carl worked at the Ford plant. In 1948, they returned to Breckenridge and Carl owned and operated Carl's Texaco until 1968, when he sold the business. He then worked as a car salesman at Smith Motors for three years before becoming employed at the Breckenridge Middle School, where he worked until his retirement.

Carl was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge, the Knights of Columbus, Eagle's Club Aerie 2749 in Wahpeton and the Golden Kiwanis. He loved to spend time at his lake home on Ottertail Lake. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf and reading. Alice preceded him in death on October 11, 1991. Carl continued living in Breckenridge until March, 2005, when he moved to Rosewood on Broadway Care Facility.
