Doris Wawers

Doris Luverne Wawers of Breckenridge, MN died Monday, July 19, 2010, at St. Francis Health Care Campus. The funeral is Friday July 23 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Breckenridge. Father Kenneth Popp will be officiating. The visitation is Thursday, July 22 from 4-8 pm. with a prayer service at 7 pm. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home. Interment is at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton, ND. The pallbearers are Dean Wawers, Cory Schultz, Matthew Wawers, Jerry Humann, Randy Rittenour, Melanie Ellingsworth.

Doris “Dorie” Janke was born on May 4, 1926 to Fred and Myrtle (Knutson) Janke in Breckenridge, MN. She grew up in the Campbell area, attending their schools and graduating from high school in 1944. After graduation, Dorie attended one year at North Dakota State College of Science majoring in Secretarial Studies. She secured employment at Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Breckenridge where she remained a loyal employee for 36 years. Dorie was united in marriage to Al Wawers on October 30, 1974. Upon retirement in 1986, Al and Dorie continued to reside in Breckenridge, but they spent their summers on Pleasant Lake fishing and grooming the flower gardens and winters in Apache Junction, Arizona where they loved to golf. Dorie’s greatest achievement on the golf course was a hole-in-one.

Not only did Dorie have a lot of outside activities that she loved, but she was also crazy about singing. Her talents positioned her to be in two barber shop quartets-The Gold Tones which was in Apache Jct. and the Combines which was a local group. Dorie’s love for all kinds of music also prompted her involvement in the groups Rhythm and Blues and Cantata, both of Apache Jct. They had the pleasure of entertaining audiences all over the regions. Dorie was also a skilled seamstress, sewing many prom dresses and the costumes for the singing groups she belonged to.

Doris is survived by her husband, Al Wawers of Breckenridge, MN; her son, Gary (Karalee) Wawers of Fargo, ND; her daughter, Barbara (Roger) Bucklin of Owensboro, KY; 4 Grandchildren, Melonie Ellingsworth, LeAnn Bertke, Matthew Wawers, Jenna Wawers and 5 Great-grandchildren.

Dorie is preceded by her parents, Fred and Myrtle Janke.
