Earl Babst, 84, of Breckenridge, MN, died January 22, 2005 at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. His funeral will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, MN with Pastor Michael Gustafson officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2005, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Breckenridge in the Spring.
Earl is survived by: His son: Richard (Ruby) Babst, Champlin, MN; His 2 daughters: Joan (Paul) Vertin, Breckenridge, MN; Lois (Jeff) Borgrud, Mapleton, ND; His 9 grandchildren; His 7 great-grandchildren; Many nieces and nephews.

Earl Erick Babst was born February 16, 1920 in Wheaton, MN, the son of Erick and Lila (Shermerhorn) Babst. He grew up near Wheaton and attended school there. Following his formal education, Earl stayed at home and worked on the family farm. On October 22, 1941, Earl entered the U. S. Army. He served in the Philippines during WWII and was discharged on April 4, 1944. He spent a year at St. Cloud Veterans Hospital then returned to his home in South Dakota. On February 18, 1945, Earl was united in marriage to Ruth Minnie Veflin in Wheaton. The couple made their home in Wheaton and later moved to Breckenridge, MN. Earl worked at several mechanic jobs in the area before he began working at Schuler's Elevator as a diesel mechanic, where he worked for over 30 years. Following his retirement they continued to make their home in Breckenridge. In 1985 Earl became a resident of St. Cloud V. A. Medical Center, St. Cloud, MN. Ruth preceded him in death on August 21, 2002.
Earl enjoyed traveling, fishing and especially time spent with his family. He will always be remembered as a good husband and provider. Earl was a member of Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Eagles Club Aerie 2749 in Wahpeton, ND and the Breckenridge American Legion.
