He attended country School District # 2537 through the 6th grade and then attended school in Breckenridge where he graduated in 1969. Elmer then attended the University of Minnesota-Crookston in the School of Horticulture and Agronomy.

In 1971 Elmer began working for Kent-Doran Grain in Brushvale, MN and in 1973 he worked for the Kent-Doran Grain operation in Doran, MN. After that he worked for Field Crest Fertilizer at Campbell, MN. While working for Field Crest, Elmer was one of the first individuals in Minnesota to receive Certified Crop Advisor status. He was very proud of this achievement. Elmer's love for his agronomy showed in the fact that during his medical condition he continued to work for Minn-Kota Ag in Breckenridge until his health prevented it.

Elmer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Campbell Lions. Elmer enjoyed grilling with his friends. He was well known in the Wilkin and Richland county area as a griller and many of the events he grilled at were for benefits or friends. As recently as June 2005 he helped cooked for two high school graduations for friends. He also loved to read many different types of books. Elmer had many friends that he was very close to and he enjoyed spending time with them and he truly enjoyed doing for others.
