Esther Monk, 72, rural Fergus Falls, MN, formerly Foxhome, MN, died May 3, 2006 at her home near Fergus Falls.
Esther was born October 20, 1933 on the farm near Eden, SD, the daughter of Lawrence R. and Bertha (Peterson) Johnson. She attended country school in Marshall and Roberts Counties in South Dakota. When Esther was 16 years old she moved to Foxhome, MN, where she worked on her uncle's farm, cleaning and cooking for his hired hands. Later she moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where she worked at the bus depot and did housework and child care for a family there.
On December 3, 1959, Esther married Harold Phillip Monk in Webster, SD. The couple made their home near Foxhome, where they raised their family of 4 children.
Harold preceded her in death on October 2, 2004. In January, 2005, Esther moved to her daughter Rita's home near Fergus Falls, where she has since resided.
Esther enjoyed playing cards, vegetable and flower gardening, feeding and watching birds, especially hummingbirds, hunting around the farmstead and spending time with her family.
She is survived by: Her children: Phillip (Sandra) Monk, Foxhome, MN; Rita (Bill) Marts, Rural Fergus Falls, MN; Curt Monk, Breckenridge, MN; Phyllis (Brian) Ripley, Erhard, MN; Her 6 grandchildren: Dale Monk, Nate Marts, Billijo Marts (fiancAsh, Anthony Porter), Bruce Marts, Heather Ripley, Matthew Ripley; Her 4 great-grandchildren; Her 2 sisters: Bernice (Herb) Rowland, Fountain Inn, SC; Eunice Kroulik, Minneapolis, MN; Her 2 brothers: Leonard (Norma) Johnson, Eden, SD; Edward (Daisy) Johnson, Pioneer Town, CA; Many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: Her parents: Lawrence and Bertha Johnson; Her husband: Harold Phillip Monk; Her great-grandson: Joshua VanCleave; Her brothers: Everett and Evan; Her sister: Barbara.
Visitation: Sunday, May 7, 2006, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at
Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
