George Payne

George Payne, 69, Breckenridge, MN, died June 1, 2005 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Fargo, N.D. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN with Pastor Terry Tilton officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

He is survived by: His son: Roger Allen Payne, Minneapolis, MN; and his brother: John Payne, Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by:     His parents: John and Rosalie Payne; His wife: Elinor "Eli" Payne; His son: William Dean Payne; His 2 sisters: Jerrie Carlton and Alta Anderson; His brother: Harold Payne

George William Payne was born December 13, 1935, the son of John Harold and Rosalie (Crocker) Payne in Crawford, Illinois. He attended grade school in Crawford and in Palestine, Illinois. George's father was a Methodist minister. As as a young man George moved with his family to Alexandria, MN, where George graduated from high school in 1954. George entered the U. S. Army in January, 1955 and served until December, 1957. He did his basic training in California, and then was transferred to San Antonio, Texas for a year before being transferred to a base in France, where he served for the next 17 months. Following his discharge from the Army, George attended a transportation school in Minneapolis, MN. He worked for GRACO, Inc. for 10 A� years, then moved to Moorhead, MN, where he lived for 8 years. He then made his home on a hobby farm north of Foxhome, MN, where he lived for 4 years before moving to Breckenridge, MN in August, 1995.

George was married to Elinor Nelson in April, 1958. Together they had 2 sons, Roger and William. Elinor preceded him in death in June, 1973. He married Beverly Fritz in July, 1984.

George was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed walking and visiting with people. He also enjoyed keeping up on the news by watching CNN and the news on the Alexandria television station.
