John was born December 28, 1930 to John and Emma (Serr) Schatz in Linton, ND. He grew up on a farm six miles north of Linton. On March 29, 1951, at age 20, he joined the US Navy. He proudly served his country for 4 years. In the fall of 1955, John enrolled at NDSCS in the Auto Mechanics program. Two years later after graduation from that program, he moved to Sisseton, SD where he worked for Bennett Chevrolet for nine years.
On September 19, 1958 he married the love of his life Elaine Green in Wahpeton, ND. They returned to Sisseton to live until 1966. At that time, they relocated to Wahpeton when John joined the faculty of NDSCS as an instructor in the Auto Mechanics Program. He taught there for 26 years until he retired from teaching in 1992. In his retirement years, being a farmer at heart, John enjoyed the time he spent every fall working on the beet harvest for the Don Yaggie family.
John loved fishing, especially on the Missouri River, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He had a strong, quiet faith. He was a member of Valley Christian Church for over 40 years where he served as a long-time usher and greeter.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Elaine; daughters Nilla (David) Christiansen of Falcon Heights, MN; LaVonne (Greg) Donaldson of Minneapolis, MN; Sherri (Scott) Jarnot of Minneapolis, MN; and one son, John (Marcy) Schatz of Minneapolis, MN; sister Lorraine (John) Werner of Linton, ND; brother Herman (Sharon) Schatz of Oshkosh, WI; and brother Robert Schatz of Devils Lake, ND; and his 8 precious grandchildren: Nicole and Cameron Donaldson; Emily and Josh Christiansen; Alaina, Jaclyn and Chloe Jarnot, and Charlie Schatz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Schatz; one brother James Schatz; and sister Loretta Humann.
