Josephine Holmes

June 30, 1911 — June 14, 2006

Josephine Holmes, 94, of Northfield, MN, formerly of Breckenridge, MN passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Three Links Care Center, Northfield, MN. Funeral services will be on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at 1:00 PM

at the Three Links Care Center at Northfield, MN with Pastor Jim Busscher officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Care Center. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Breckenridge, MN.

Josephine is survived by, her daughters, Diane B. Holmes (Stephen) Schmidt, Luverne, MN, Patricia J. Holmes (Robert) May, Lakeville, MN; her seven grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren; and her many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Josephine was preceded by, her parents, Louie and Ida Matz; her husband, Maurice Holmes; and her siblings.

Josephine was the youngest of nine children born to Louie and Ida (Aigner) Matz. She was born outside of Breckenridge, MN on June 30, 1911 and moved with her family to the town when she was seven. Josephine completed high school in Breckenridge, where she was a member of the girl's kitten ball team, the girl's basketball team, and the glee club. She played piano and her love of music continued through her life.

On October 24, 1942 she married Maurice Holmes, also of Breckenridge and continued working as Assistant County Auditor until the birth of their first child two years later. Maurice preceded her is death on February 12, 1989. Josephine continued to live in Breckenridge until she became a resident of Three Links Care Facility in Northfield, MN in 1994.

Josephine was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Breckenridge and was active in the Ladies' Aid organization there. Throughout her life she actively supported her children, working with the school groups to which they belonged.

One her greatest joys was seeing first her daughters and then several of her grandchildren become accomplished pianists. Happy family memories include listening to her clown around on the piano herself, playing and singing. When asked once what her greatest accomplishment was she responded immediately that she had raised two daughters who know the Lord Jesus.
