Kenneth Harvey Van Tassel, 90, of Breckenridge, MN, died on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at St. Francis Health Care Campus. The visitation is at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Sunday, October 28 from 5:00 to 7:00PM. The funeral is at Breckenridge Lutheran Church on Monday October 29 at 1:30PM. Pastor Mark Manning is officiating. The interment is at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge, MN.
Kenneth Harvey VanTassel, son of Eugene and Alice (Harvey) VanTassel, was born on a farm northeast of Kent, MN on July 19, 1922. He went to grade school in the country and graduated from Breckenridge High school in 1941. He farmed with his dad and brothers for several years and made several trips custom combining down South. He worked in the winter at different jobs including Boeing Aircraft.
Ken married Donna Czichotzki in 1948. They bought I-O-Way Resort on Ottertail Lake in 1956 and change the name to Greenwood Resort. They made it into a 16-cabin Resort. In 1981, Ken married Joyce Grenier, and until 1985, they continued to run the resort. They moved to Breckenridge in 2005. In his spare time, Ken enjoyed fishing, carpentry work, going to the Mahnomen Casino and riding snowmobile. He also enjoyed hunting with other family members.
Ken is survived by his wife Joyce; three step children, Kenny (Darlene) Grenier of Breckenridge, MN, Paulette (Gary) Hushka of Garrison, ND, LaDawn (Keith) Kappes of Kent, MN; 8 step grandchildren and 17 step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Ken is preceded in death by his wife Donna; 7 sisters and 4 brothers.
