Lois Vertin, 96, of Breckenridge, MN passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2005 in Breckenridge, MN. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 11:30 AM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Breckenridge, MN with Father Kenneth Popp officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Breckenridge, MN. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 20, 2005, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Breckenridge, MN.
Lois Catherine (Sherwood) Vertin was born on January 25, 1909 to George Marsh Sherwood and Penelopha "Neffie" Gaughn in LaMoure County near Verona, ND. Lois graduated from Fargo High School in 1927 and Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND. In 1928 she went to work for Northwest Audit Company and Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. In 1932 Lois went to work for General Motors Company in Fargo, ND then worked for Worner Co. Lois then moved to Minneapolis and worked for General Motors and again transferred back to the Fargo office when the branch office of General Motors opened there again in 1936.
On August 31, 1936 Lois was united in marriage to Norbert "Bud" Vertin at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo, ND. Then, because of the war, all married women were laid off. Lois did secretarial work at Coal Company in 1937 and then as a bookkeeper. They moved to Breckenridge in 1938 where she worked in the office at the Joseph Vertin & Sons Furniture Store until her first child was born in 1940. After their fifth child was born she went back to work at the Furniture Store and retired in 1980. Norbert "Bud" preceded her in death on February 12, 1998. She continued to live independently in her home.
Lois was a member of the Breckenridge Women's Study Club, Catholic Christian Mothers Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters. She also belonged to a bowling league and book club.
Lois is survived by two sons,Paul (Joan) Vertin, Breckenridge, MN and George Vertin, Breckenridge, MN; three daughters, Barbara Vertin, Hot Springs, AR,Mary (John) Vorlicky, Everson, WA, LoAnn (Rich) Raftevold, Barnesville, MN; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Neal Sherwood, San Diego, CA and Gerald (Myrtle) Sherwood, Woburn, OR.
Lois is preceded in death by, her parents, George and Neffie Sherwood; her husband, Norbert "Bud" Vertin; her brothers, Lee and George Sherwood; her sister, Marie Burns.
