Lowell Wayne Bontjes was born January 14, 1952 in Breckenridge, MN, the fourth child born to Henry and Ruth (Haslerud) Bontjes. He was raised and educated in the Breckenridge/ Wahpeton area, graduating from Wahpeton High School in 1970. Lowell worked for Rogers Hatchery in Wahpeton, ND, and Schweitzers Flax Plant and the Scotchmen's Bar in Breckenridge. On August 2, 1978, Lowell was married to Carol Luick in Fairmount, ND. Lowell furthered his education at Moorhead State University from 1985 to 1989 where he obtained a degree in Social Work. He then began his professional career with the State of North Dakota as a Social Worker, working in Wahpeton, Fargo and Jamestown. He most recently has been working in the Bismarck-Mandan area with the North Dakota Coalition of Homeless People and several other organizations working hard to provide food, water, shelter and a place for the homeless to be safe.

Lowell loved fishing and was great at it. He loved fishing the Minnesota Lakes, and the Jamestown Reservoir and Devils Lake in North Dakota. Besides his love for telling huge fish tales, he also loved hunting, football, baseball and was an enthusiastic fan of the Minnesota Twins.
