Marian Amundson

Marian S. Amundson, 85, Fargo, ND and Kent, MN, died peacefully in her sleep on June 9, 2007, while on a trip with her daughter and son-in-law in Omaha, NE.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2007, at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, MN. Pastor Burt Benson will be officiating. The visitation will be Wednesday, June 13, 2007, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Wolverton, MN.

Marian is survived by: Her daughter, Sheila Hillberry (Joseph) of Rapid City, SD; Her two sons, Paul Stuehrenberg (Carole DeVore) of North Haven, CT, and Daniel Stuehrenberg (Judy) of Canmore, AB; Her son-in-law David Ness (Judy) of Eden Prairie, MN; Her grandchildren Rusty and Jody Hillberry (Christine), Erin, Jenna, and Carly Ness, Eric Ness (Stacy), Paul Outka (Uma), Elizabeth Outka (Trip Pollard), Kevin and Kent Garossino (Nicola); and five great grandchildren, T.J. and Katelynn Hillberry, Katherine and Thomas Pollard, and Isaac Outka; her sister Betty Schram (Bob); and two sisters-in-law Arda Stuehrenberg and Ruby Sandberg; Several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: Her parents; her brothers Martin and Elworth Sandberg; Her sister Marjorie Brusven; and her daughter Eva Ness.

Marian was born in a farmhouse outside of Strathcona, Roseau County, MN, on Sept. 13, 1921, the daughter of Jenny and Martin Sandberg. She grew up in Iowa and Missouri before her family settled in Detroit Lakes, MN, in 1932. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School and completed a two-year teaching certificate at Moorhead State Teachers College in 1941. She taught in rural Wilkin County, MN, and in Watertown, SD, before marrying Henry Stuehrenberg in 1944. Marian offered piano lessons in her home for many years. She returned to teaching elementary school in 1962, with positions in Madison, Battle Lake, Kent, and Breckenridge, MN. From 1970-1982 she served as Director of Reading at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School in Fargo, ND. She earned a BS and MS in Education from Moorhead State College. Henry Stuehrenberg died in April 1966. In November 1968 she married Erwin (Buck) Amundson, who died in June 1994 after a long illness.

Marian was active in Christ Lutheran Church in Mitchell Township, MN, serving as organist, choir director, and teacher. She was also a member of the choir and LWML at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City, SD.

Marian had many interests, including travel, genealogy, history, music, word games, and embroidery. She spent much of her time caring for others, especially in later years her parents, her second husband Buck, and her sister Marjorie. Marian weathered disappointments and grief with grace and strength. She selflessly mentored and encouraged others and was a loyal and generous friend of many.

Pallbearers will be: Lawrence Poppel, Duane Stuehrenberg, Karol Brusven, Galen Affield, Terry Stuehrenberg and Richard Schram. Honorary Pallbearer is Ryan Schram
