Mildred was born in Texas on December 22, 1910. She grew up and attended school in Houston, TX. Following graduation from high school she pursued her interest in business. She later became a firm believer in the healing power of herbs and health foods.
In the 1970's she and her husband, Adam Knaust, opened Adam's Specialty Food Store in McAllen, Texas and successfully operated the business for over 20 years. This venture combined her interest in business and herbal remedies.
Mildred traveled widely in the United States and abroad. She liked oriental design and had several pieces from her travels in China. Motor sports and horseracing were her favorite sports and she once attended both the Indianapolis 500 race and the Kentucky Derby.
In retirement Mildred wintered in McAllen and spent the summers in Hankinson, ND. In May of 2003, following a fall, she entered St. Catherine's Living Center in Wahpeton, ND, where she made many friends among the residents and staff and enjoyed participating in activities.
Mildred died peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at St. Catherine's. She was preceded in death by her parents and three husbands.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of Mildred's friends and the staff at St. Catherine's Living Center.
