Nellie Alice Marie Hollands was born November 21, 1911 in Christine, North Dakota, to Richard and Albertha Josephine (Nyman) Hollands. As a young girl, Nellie's family lived in Christine, ND. She went to a consolidated school in the country near Christine. At home she was expected to help with the house and outside work, milk cows, haul hay and take care of her siblings. Nellie's teenage years were very happy and she worked for different ladies doing housework. She enjoyed going to dances, carnivals, fairs and going to the movies. She met her husband, Martin Helgeson, at a house party. Nellie and Martin were married on March 31, 1931 in Breckenridge, MN. They made their home on a farm near Colfax. Martin worked on the railroad and farmed. Nellie worked hard raising her family and caring for their cattle.

Nellie enjoyed family gatherings. She and Martin celebrated many holidays at their farm by cooking big dinners. They enjoyed when their kids and grandkids came to the farm; horseback riding and playing softball.

Martin preceded her in death in June, 1986. Nellie continued living on the farm which she loved. She always enjoyed visits from her family and hosting get-togethers.
