Teresa was born December 21, 1956 in Rochester, MN, the daughter of Warren and Donna(LaPierre) Randall. She grew up and attended schools in the Rochester area and graduated from Wabasha High School, Wabasha, MN in 1975. She then attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and graduated in 1978.

On August 26, 1978, she was united in marriage to Michael A. Gustafson at Wabasha. They lived in St. Paul where Teresa worked in the business office at Luther Seminary while Michael completed his ministry studies. They then moved to Bemidji, MN and lived there until 1985 when then moved to Breckenridge, MN. Teresa accepted a teaching position in the English department at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. She completed her Masters Degree during that time, and later continued her career at the Breckenridge Middle School, by doing what she'd always dreamed of, teaching English to 7th and 8th grade students.

Teresa loved being a teacher and was a voracious reader of contemporary novels. She greatly enjoyed the thrill of a good rollercoaster, loved to bake cookies, and appreciated the solace of spending time at home with her family.
