Vivian Hausauer

Vivian Hausauer, 83, of Wahpeton, ND, died Saturday, September 24, 2005, at the St. Francis Healthcare Campus in Breckenridge, MN.



Vivian Lucille Eckstrom was born October 14, 1921 in Wausa, NE to George Edwin Eckstrom and Anna (Dullum) Eckstrom. Her early childhood was spent on her grandparent's farm in rural North Dakota where she was raised by her aunt Jennie (Dullum) Hendrickson. She moved to live with her father and attended high school in Wayne, NE and graduated in 1939. Vivian was a 1942 graduate of the St Francis School of Nursing in Breckenridge. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics and Psychiatry at St Mary's Hospital in Duluth, MN before serving in the Army Nurse Corps, United States Army during WWII, from 1942 to 1945. She was assigned to the 23rd Field Hospital and served in Australia, Biak Island, New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon in the Philippines and also in Japan. She was part of the advanced medical group that entered and liberated Santo Tomas University prison in Manila during the Luzon campaign. She received the Bronze Star Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, and the Victory Medal. She attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant.



After her service, Vivian returned to the states and worked as Head Nurse and Private Duty Nurse at St Francis Hospital in Breckenridge. In 1947 she worked in the private practice of Dr. A.H. Reiswig and Dr. E.R. Wasemiller in Wahpeton.



On May 29, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage to Allen H. Hausauer at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton. She spent several years raising her family, and in the early 1970's, briefly returned to nursing at the Wahpeton Rehabilitation Center and St. Gerard's Hospital in Hankinson, ND.



Vivian was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW). She was a Life Member of the Retired Officers Association and a Charter Member of the Women in Military Service for America in Arlington, VA (WIMSA) and a Charter Member of the National WWII Memorial Society. Vivian was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Breckenridge.



Vivian is survived by her four daughters: Candice Hausauer of Wahpeton; Michelle "Mickey" (Carris) Vondal of Chantilly, VA; Linda Hausauer of Wahpeton; Jacque Strege of Fargo, ND; two grandsons: Matthew Vondal and Michael Vondal both of Chantilly, VA; a brother Russell Eckstrom of Colfax, ND and a sister Georgina Eckstrom of Wausa, NE; and the family pet, Billie. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one sister.



A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at Grace Lutheran Church in Breckenridge, MN with Pastor Burt Benson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home of Breckenridge, MN will be providing the funeral arrangements.



Vivian will be missed by those she loved and cared for.
