William McCullough

William "Bill" McCullough, 82, of Breckenridge, MN, died December 8, 2005 in Breckenridge. His funeral will be Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at 10:00 A. M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Breckenridge, MN. Officiating:     Fr. Kenneth Popp. Visitation will be Monday, December 12, 2005, from 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge. There will also be visitation on Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 AM until the time of the funeral at the funeral home.

Interment: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Breckenridge, MN.

Survived by: His daughters and sons-in-law: Betty and Mark Ellingson, Reynolds, ND; Mary and Galen Fischer, Breckenridge, MN; His son: Jerry McCullough; His 9 grandchildren; His sister: Beverly Barrows, Moorhead, MN

Many nieces and nephews.

William "Bill" was born on June 7, 1923, to Edward E. and Edna I. (Peterson) McCullough at Grand Forks, ND. He attended school in Grand Forks and Fargo, ND and moved to Breckenridge in 1937 when his mother married W. B. "Bill" Hart. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1941. He then attended the North Dakota State College of Science and Moorhead State College.

Bill enlisted as a Cadet in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and after graduating as a Flight Officer he was stationed in England during World War II as a pilot of a B-17 Bomber with the 8th Army Air Force flying 19 missions over Germany; receiving the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, 2 Bronze Service Stars and European Theater of Operations Medal.

Upon returning from service in 1945, he attended Science School. On March 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Kathaleen F. Donahue in Breckenridge. He worked as a Switchman on the G. N. Railroad and was employed as Bookkeeper at the Chevrolet Garage in Wahpeton, ND.

Bill was appointed Deputy Wilkin County Auditor in December, 1949. He was also a member of Co. I, 164th Infantry, Wahpeton, from 1948 to 1955 and served in Okinawa during the Korean War. He was the Wilkin County Fair Secretary for 13 years, from 1953 to 1966. After working for 20 years as Deputy Auditor he was appointed Wilkin County Auditor in 1969. He was re-elected every 4 years to that position until he retired on December 1, 1984. He wife, Kathy, passed away on March 12, 1992.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Breckenridge, MN. The Alfred Lockman American Legion Post #53, Disabled American Veterans, World War II Last Man's Club and Honorary Member of the Minnesota County Auditors' Association.

Bill enjoyed cooking, hunting, gardening and woodworking.
