Duane Harold Gaustad, 79, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 23, 2018, followed immediately by the funeral service at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. Interment will be held at a later date.
Duane Harold Gaustad was born near Henning, MN, on August 7, 1938, to Helmer and Clara (Braaten) Gaustad. After graduating from high school in 1956, he began working at the Fergus Falls Municipal Airport. Later, he worked in Montana for a short time before returning to North Dakota where he held several different jobs. Duane enlisted in the United States Army where he was proud to serve his country in Germany during the Vietnam Conflict. After being discharged, he worked in Montana and later returned to his hometown, Henning. In 1988, he moved to Fergus Falls and, most recently, he was living in Breckenridge, MN.
Duane was an active member in the Breckenridge American Legion and the VFW in Fergus Falls, MN. He enjoyed working with his hands and he used this passion to excel in the craft of woodworking. When he wasn’t working on one of his projects, he liked watching television and had a special love for his cockatiel birds.
Duane is survived by several of his nieces and nephews; his great-nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Mary Anderson. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Helmer and Clara (Braaten) Gaustad; his siblings, Donald Gaustad, Clayton Gaustad, Bernice Peyerl, and Artis Fick.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge.
