Agnes Merrick

October 19, 1919 — December 14, 2005

Agnes Merrick, 86, New Hope, MN, formerly of Kent, MN, died Wednesday, December14, 2005 at St. Therese Nursing Home, New Hope.

Her funeral will be Monday, December 19, 2005, at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Kent, MN, with Fr. Kenneth Popp officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, December 18, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Monday morning.

Interment will be at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Kent.

She is survived by: Her children: James (Fiesta) Merrick, Hauula, HI; Judy Merrick-Lockett, Golden Valley, MN; Mary Jo (Thomas) Merrick-Lockett, Brooklyn Park, MN; Tom Merrick (Joey Pineda), Glendale, CA; Her grandchildren: Joseph (Alisha) Merrick, Jaison (Katie) Merrick, Joshua (Ashley) Merrick, Rachel Lockett, John Merrick, Thaddeus Lockett, Faylynn Merrick, Trent Lockett, Fayrina Merrick and Taylor Lockett; Her 3 great-grandchildren: Zara, Leeanna and Kallie Merrick; Her sister: Sister Theresella (Anna) SSPS, Waukegan, IL.

She was preceded by: Her husband: Paul H. Merrick; Her parents: Bernard and Anna Underberg; Her sisters: Mary Nees, Frances LeNoue, Sr. Sophia (Rose) SSPS, Catherine Bellmore and Katie in infancy; Her brothers: John, Peter, Henry, William, Leo, and Anthony Underberg; Her son-in-law: Theodore Lockett

Agnes was born at rural Kent, MN on October 19, 1919, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Otto) Underberg. She attended school through the 8th grade at Kent, and graduated from high school at St. Francis Academy, Hankinson, ND. Following her formal education, she worked at Lotzer's Grocery and Confectionary in Kent for five years.

Agnes was married to Paul Merrick on October 24, 1944 in Kent. The couple lived on the Merrick Homestead, where they farmed and raised their family. Agnes worked at Pamida in Wahpeton from 1970 to 1981. She and Paul retired from farming in 1978 and continued to live on the homestead.

Paul and Agnes did a lot of traveling with their children around the five state areas. However, she and Paul continued traveling on a larger scale when the children left home by traveling to Europe, Central America, the South Seas, Alaska, Florida and Hawaii.

In 1994, they moved to St. Cloud, MN, and later moved to Sartell, MN. Paul preceded her in death on March 19, 2002. Agnes has lived in New Hope, MN since his death.

Agnes was an active leader of the Kent 4-H Club and taught CCD for many years at St. Thomas Catholic Church, where she was a member. She was a long time member of the Catholic Society of Foresters, in which she held an office for over 45 years. She was also a member of St. Thomas Mission Circle.
