Bessie Mae Heifner, 91 of Breckenridge, MN passed away on November 11, 2011 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge. The visitation is Monday, November 14 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The funeral is at the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge on Tuesday, November 15 at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour prior at the church. Pastor Gary Gottfried is officiating. The interment is at Hillside Cemetery in Rosholt, SD.
Bessie was born on August 2, 1920 in rural Rosholt, SD to Isaac "IA" and Etta (Shelor) Smith. She grew up attended country school near Rosholt graduating from Rosholt high school in 1938. She attended Northern Teacher's School in Aberdeen, SD obtaining a teaching position in a country school near her hometown of Rosholt. Bessie was united in marriage to Glen Heifner on June 15, 1941 in Hawley, MN. They made their home on a farm south of Rosholt until 1958 when they moved into town. She continued to teach on a substitute basis in Rosholt and also worked at the nursing home there.
Bessie treasured the times that her and Glen traveled together. They had the privilege of visiting every state in the continental US. When she wasn't traveling, her days were filled with flower gardening and visiting friends, and she especially cherished her time spent with family. Glen passed away on January 20, 2006 and that same year, Bessie entered St. Francis Nursing Home. The bond and friendship with the nursing home staff brought her much joy. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her.
Bessie is survived by her two daughters Sharon (LeRoy) Berens of Duluth, MN and Tami (Gerald) Kallstrom of Breckenridge, MN; her grandchildren Troy, Tiffany, Jeremy (Courtney), and Korey; one great-grandchild Keanna; and one sister Doris Gillespie of Hemet, CA.
Bessie is preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parents Isaac and Etta; her granddaughter Tracy; two sisters Martha Alva Smith and Gracie Dahl and two brothers Fredrick and Thomas.
