Betty Elaine Wanek, 82 of Doran, MN died Friday August 17, 2012 at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge, MN. The visitation is Tuesday, August 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with the prayer service at 7 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The funeral service is 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 22 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, with Kristi Bivens officiating. The interment is at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton, ND.
B.E. "Betty" Wanek was born October 22, 1929 to Daniel Dennis McManigle and Alma Martina Olson at Wyndmere, ND. She attended country school in Homestead Township for eight years and two years of high school at Gwinner, ND. She then moved with her family to Galchutt, ND and worked in Breckenridge, MN at Sam's Café. Betty was united in marriage to Walter Wanek on May 1, 1950. They established their lives together on the Wanek home farm near Doran, MN. Betty worked as a teacher's aide, drove school bus, and worked at Anderson Food, later known as Jerry's Market, all while raising seven children. Betty lived on the farm until February 2012.
Betty enjoyed gardening and the satisfaction of freezing and canning her vegetables. She was an avid reader and liked to solve crossword puzzles. She was especially devoted to her family. Her grandchildren loved being at the farm and never refused grandma's cooking, baking or canned goods.
Betty Wanek died surrounded by love, with the comfort of family by her side, at St. Francis Nursing Home on August 17, 2012 where she had spent the last three weeks of her life. She is survived by her seven children: Patty Johnson of Alexandria, MN, Janie Wanek of Valley City, ND, Mary (Wanek) Evenson and Linda Wanek (Ron Berg) all of Doran, MN, Karen Wanek and Robert (Kim) Wanek all of Breckenridge, MN, and Jennifer Wanek of Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren: Tate (Jodi), Brett, and Trent Johnson, Jessica, Michael (Brandi), and Vanessa Evenson, Robert and Carter Wanek; six great-grandchildren: Isaak and Ian Johnson, Brooklyn and Sierra Evenson, Dayne and Owen Evenson and a great-granddaughter due in December; her sister Jane Solano of Santa Anna, CA; her brother Lyle McManigle of Sun City, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Walter (2011), her parents Daniel and Alma McManigle, her sisters Grace Snyder, Fern Sarsland, June Vanderplaats, Gloria Staples and her brothers Wallace, Dennis, Alan, Kenneth and three brothers and one sister who died in infancy.
