Charles Hegel

Charles George Hegel, 77, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Tuesday, January 06, 2015, at St. Francis Medical Center, Breckenridge, under the care of Riveredge Hospice and surrounded by his family. His visitation will be at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, Friday, January 9, with a prayer service at 5:30 PM and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:45. The visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge at 10:30 AM. Father Joseph Backowski will celebrate the Mass. The interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Charles was born on April 29, 1937, to Harry and June (Haut) Hegel, in Belfield, ND. He grew up on the family farm south of Belfield in Stark County. He graduated from Belfield High School in 1956. He joined the US Navy in June of 1956, attended Machinist Mate School, and was assigned to the USS Midway CVA41 Aircraft Carrier for three years. In 1961, after a year of working construction in Medora, ND, he joined the US Air Force, where he attended electronics school and then spent three years in Spain. He was honorably discharged in March of 1965.
Following his military career, Charles married Valeria Schillinger, on August 21, 1965, at St. Mary's of The Presentation Catholic Church in Breckenridge. The couple lived in Wahpeton, ND from 1965 to 1967, while Charles attended NDSSS in the electronic curriculum. After graduation, they moved to Waseca, MN, where he was employed at the E.F. Johnson Company as an electronic technician. In 1969, Charles and Val moved back to Val's childhood farm south of Breckenridge, where they resided until moving into town in 2002.
Charles began his career at NDSSS in March of 1970, in the Instructional Resources Department; a position he held for 29 years. He retired in 1999. While living on the farm, he was a faithful member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fairmount, where he served on Parish Council and as trustee, and taught Sunday school. Charles joined the Knights of Columbus in 1971. He served as Grand Knight, achieving Fourth Degree Grand Knight in 2003. His family was chosen Family of the Year in 2006. Charles was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church from 2002 until his passing. He served as an extraordinary minister and was on the decorating committee, lending a hand with building wooden tables and other items necessary for decorating the church. Charles loved being around his family. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, photography, and traveling. He had been a member of the American Legion since 1981.
Charles, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, is survived by his wife of 49 years, Val; his 2 daughters, Julie (Mark) Ennen of Wahpeton and Jean (Steven) Hinsverk of Wahpeton; his grandchildren, Ryan and Mason Ennen, Cole and Carson Hinsverk; his sister, Marilyn (Patrick) Hecker of Moorhead, MN; his nieces and nephews, Doug, Mike, Jake, Brad, Troy, Judy, and Debbie. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and June; and his brother, Harry Hegel, Jr.
