Charles John Lawrence was born on October 8, 1913 in rural Wahpeton, ND, to Charles W. and Mary A. (Wanek) Lawrence. He attended rural school growing up on the family farm in Richland County and farmed with his parents. Charles and his brother, Clarence, made their First Holy Communion on Sunday, June 21, 1925.

In 1937 Charles started working for Ottertail Power Company in Wahpeton. Charles married Gladys Swenson on November 18, 1938, in Wahpeton. He entered the U. S. Army in February of 1944 where he served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Charles returned from the service in 1946 and continued working for Ottertail Power Company. He took early retirement in 1978 after over forty years of employment with Ottertail. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4324.

His lifelong interests included hunting and fishing. He fished with his sons, Dave and Dick, at favorite spots including Kidder Station on the Red River and Smith's Bridge in Otter Tail County. The family's most enjoyable memories were time spent together at Charles' boyhood home on the family farm north of Wahpeton, along the Red River of the North.

In past years Charles had been a resident of the Leach Home of Wahpeton, ND; Dakota Estates Retirement Home of Lidgerwood, ND; and most recently the North Dakota Veterans Home of Lisbon, ND. His last months at the Veterans Home in Lisbon were a very pleasant time for him. The nursing home staff cared for him with dedication and compassion. For this the family is truly grateful.
