Clarence Hulne

April 8, 1926 — December 20, 2016

Clarence Michael Hulne, 90, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND, on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. The visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:00 PM, on Wednesday, December 21, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The visitation will continue on Thursday, December 22, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Kent, MN, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Father Joseph Backowski will be the Celebrant.
Clarence Hulne was born April 8, 1926, on the family farm near Colfax, ND, to Alphonse and Mary Belle (Prody) Hulne. He attended rural country schools and then joined his brother, Walter, helping on the farm. Clarence served his country in the US Army and was deployed overseas during WWII. Following his military service, he returned home and married the love of his life, Betty Jean Gibson on October 29, 1947, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. The couple made their home on the Hulne family farm, working side by side raising their six children; and living next door to Walter. Clarence also worked for Rutten Seed Farm, Colfax Elevator, and local farmer, Myron Rostad. In 2005, they sold the farm and moved to Breckenridge and became next-door neighbors again to his brother, Walter. The two couples spent many enjoyable hours playing cards together.
Clarence loved woodworking and the character of old tractors. He appreciated all types of animals but really took a fancy to Schnauzers. He enjoyed shooting the breeze with old and new friends and was always up for a game of cards with them. Above all, Clarence cherished his family and the time they spent together.
Clarence will be missed by his wife, Betty, of Breckenridge; his children, Jean Johnson of Fargo, ND, Michael Hulne of Sandwich, IL, David (Linda) Hulne of Sandwich, IL, Jack (Donzetta) Hulne of Granbury, TX, Dorothy (Sean) Stapleton of Arlington, TX, and Gregory Hulne of Maple Grove, MN; his nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Gladys Ritchie of Kent, MN; and his brother Joe Hulne of Breckenridge; a sister-in-law, June Hulne of West Fargo and a brother-in-law, Donald Krook, of Becker, MN and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Mary; a grandson, Scott Stapleton; his brother, Walter Hulne; and two sisters, Margaret Krook, and Elsie Pedersen.
