Delbert Nelson

Delbert Dwight Nelson, 80 of Breckenridge, MN, died at St. Francis Health Care Campus, January 20, 2013. The visitation is at Joseph Vertin & sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, Tuesday, January 22, from 4 to 7:00PM. The funeral is 1:30PM, Wednesday, January 23 at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Gottfried officiating. The interment is at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND.
Delbert was born to Emmanuel and Lillian (Voss) Nelson, on August 12, 1932, White Rock Township in Robert County South Dakota. He lived on a farm and attended school near White Rock. At the age of 20 he was drafted in to the Army and served in Korea where he received the Korean Service Medal, National Service Medal, National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. In 1954, he was honorably discharged and moved back to the area, going to work for FEMCO farm, north of Breckenridge. Delbert was united in marriage to Darlene Jordan on December 17, 1955 in Webster, SD. For the next 19 years, he worked for Schuler Grain. He then drove truck for a farmer near Rosholt, worked in maintenance at St. Francis Nursing Home, and finished out his career at the Leach Home where he worked in maintenance for 12 years. Darlene preceded him in death, April 13, 2000.
Delbert was a member of the Breckenridge Legion, Wahpeton Eagle's Club, Military Order of Cooties, and a lifetime member of the Breckenridge VFW. He enjoyed playing Bingo, Whist and Pinochle. He loved to fish and treasured the times spent with family and friends, particularly, special friends Robert and Anastasia Terfehr. Delbert loved dogs and often rescued the ones he owned. He always had a four-legged companion by his side.
Delbert is survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Darlene; 5 sisters, Bernice Benedict, Grace Johnson, Agnes Fixson, Mildred Meyer, and Virginia Stave; and his 4 brothers, Ralph, Robert, Morris, and Archie.
