Donald Duane Lelm, 75 of Breckenridge, MN passed away at his home on March 15, 2011. The visitation is Friday, March 18, 2011 from 4-6 pm at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge, MN. The funeral is on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 10:30 am also at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home. Officiating the service is Pastor Dave Andrews from the United Methodist Church in Wahpeton, ND. The interment is at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Wahpeton, ND at a later date.
Donald was born on February 21, 1936 to Edward and Dorathea (Weber) Lelm in Belfort Township. He attended Deville country school until the eighth grade and then graduated from Fairmount High School. Don married Doris Math in 1954 and they made their home in Peoria, IL where he worked for the Caterpillar Company for 2 years. They then moved to Breckenridge and Don became owner operator of the Breck Standard Station. Later he worked for Spies Grocery Store and in 1972 became manager of the Piggly Wiggly store until its closing. He finished out his career at 3-M and Imation, retiring in 2002. In 1985, Doris lost a five year battle to cancer.
On August 17, 1985, Don was united in marriage to Viva Snyder-Meredith at United Methodist Church in Wahpeton, ND. Don adopted her two children and they made their home in Breckenridge.
Don enjoyed many hobbies. In his spare time, he loved fishing, yard work, camping, tinkering on his vehicles, traveling, roller skating, dancing, duck hunting and helping in the community.
Don is survived by his wife Viva Lelm of Breckenridge, MN; his children Doreen Henne of Lakota, ND; Donavon (Joni) Lelm of Mooreton, ND; and DaNell (Perry) Holweger of Breckenridge, MN; Marguerite (Danny) Doucett of New Prague, MN; and Jim Lelm of Breckenridge, MN; his 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings Gary (Nancy) Lelm of Peoria, IL, Warren (Jean) Gast of Kent, MN; Gene (Sue) Gast of Moorhead, MN; Nancy (Jim) Powers of Peoria, IL; and Delores (Wayne) Bezenek of Breckenridge, MN.
Don is preceded in death by his first wife, Doris; his grandson Alex Blumhoefer (Marguerite); his parents Dorathea and Eddie Lelm; his step parents Katie Lelm and Albert Gast; his sister Elaine; his nephew Roger Lelm; his uncle Clifford Weber; and his aunt Frieda Krause
