The funeral will be at 11:00am, Monday, September 23 at the Foxhome Lutheran Church with Pastor John Andrews and Pastor Paul Schiotz officiating. Interment will be at Vukku Cemetery in Foxhome.
DuWayne W. Johnson "Big Du" as he was fondly referred to by his friends was born July 17, 1948 at Breckenridge, MN to Donald and Dorothy (Zarling) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm in Foxhome with his older brother Vance and sister, Carol. He attended grade school in Foxhome. He graduated High School in 1966 from Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN where he was also captain of his wrestling team. Through 4-H, DuWayne won many trips to the state fair for cattle and grain. He was an active member of the Vukku Youth group and he always had a part in the Lenten play. Every Saturday and Sunday he rode in horse shows with the Red River Riders Saddle Club.
DuWayne began farming with his dad and brother Vance on the family farm. On September 14, 1968, DuWayne was united in marriage to Cindy Steeves at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton, ND. They lived in Foxhome where they raised their daughters, Jackie, Rebecca, and Greta. Because of health reasons, he had to quit farming. He began trucking in 1977 as an owner-operator and CRE and continued trucking until 2004. DuWayne loved horses and putting on the pony show at the Wilkin County Fair and Western Days. He especially took pleasure in the chariot races…the faster the better.
His health took a severe decline in 2004. After a tough battle, he received a double lung transplant on January 31, 2006. He felt very blessed to meet the family of Rigo Morales a short time later.
On July 8, 2006, DuWayne was united in marriage to Marlene Metcalf at Vukku Lutheran Church. They spent much time gardening and started Mar-Du Canning to provide homemade goods to their family. They enjoyed short vacations together, and for the last 8 years they taught Vacation Bible School at Foxhome Lutheran Church. They also had a special place in their hearts for their three cats. He was a member of Vukku Lutheran Church, Red River Riders Club, and The Wilkin County Sheriff Posse.
In all the years of his illness- although trying for his family and friends- it never got DuWayne down. He was always "fine and dandy." He will be remembered for his sense of humor. Many of his friends have stories of falling victim to his practical jokes. He was often described as "someone you couldn't help but like".
DuWayne is lovingly survived by his wife Marlene, his three daughters Jackie (Gary) Nordick of Waconia, MN Rebecca (Mark) Petersen of Andover, MN and Greta (Mike) Petrich of Osakis, MN; seven grandchildren; five step children; seventeen step- grandchildren and thirteen great-step grandchildren; his brother Vance (Marlene) Johnson, and sister Carol (Al) Balk both of Foxhome, MN; and his very special friend Vicky Summerville of Breckenridge, MN.
DuWayne is preceded in death by his parents Donald and Dorothy.
