Elnora Mary Friederichs was born to Joseph (Ben) and Violet (Rohweller) Friederichs on May 5, 1914 on a farm site called the "White Onion", in a sod shanty, located in Foxhome Township, Wilkin County, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm south of Foxhome near the Ottertail River. She attended District 62 Country School where she received her 8th grade diploma. She began taking correspondence classes through the "Women's Institute of Pennsylvania". One class was a course in sewing in which she excelled.
On April 6, 1932, Elnora was united in marriage to Robert Steeves at St. James Catholic Church in Maine, MN. They farmed for several years in Wilkin County until Bob went into the construction business. Their marriage was blessed with ten children. As the children were growing up, she worked in the fields for her dad and later selling insurance.
During the Depression, Elnora managed and worked for a government program that sewed items for the sick and needy. She also sewed her children's clothes, everything from overalls to coats. She was an accomplished pianist and delighted in playing for family and friends. Her favorite piece was "Falling Waters" which was her 5th grade recital piece.
Elnora was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Foxhome. As a member of the Riverside Jets Homemakers Club, she was awarded the longest active "Membership Certificate" for 60 years. She loved gardening, canning, caring for her flowers, and having her family come to visit her in her home in which she proudly lived until she was 98 years old.
