Ethel Eunice Hiedeman was born in Sunnyside Township, Wilkin County Minnesota, on January 11, 1918, to Arthur and Ruth (Owen) Hiedeman. She was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Abercrombie. She attended Campbell High School and graduated in 1935.
Ethel was united in marriage to Robert E. Petersen on December 19, 1940, at the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge. They lived and worked on the home farm with his parents until they moved to their own farm near Doran, Minnesota. They later began farming in partnership with her brother, Russel Hiedeman, just southeast of Breckenridge near the Ottertail River. They continued to farm there until 1969, when they retired and moved to Breckenridge. In 1976, they moved to their lake home along Ottertail Lake near Fergus Falls, Minnesota. There were many cherished memories made at the lake from family reunions and get-togethers. Robert passed away in 1994, and Ethel later moved back to Breckenridge where she lived at York Manor. In 2007, she moved to Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge and in 2009 she began her residence at St. Francis Nursing Home. She treasured the many friendships she made among the residents and staff at York Manor during her years there.
As her children were growing up, Ethel was a dedicated 4-H leader and program advocate. Gardening and landscaping was among her favorite pastimes and she delighted in putting together a kaleidoscope of colorful flowers in her yard. She also maintained a delectable vegetable garden. She took much pleasure in listening to music and among her favorites were old-time country and gospel. Ethel also enjoyed baking and sewing, and was a member of a bowling league for many years. She was a picture taking enthusiast and would relax by reading, quilting, and crocheting. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Breckenridge and during her years at Ottertail Lake, she was a member of the Richville United Methodist Church.
Ethel is survived by her children, Barbara (Don) DeVine of Hemet, CA; Richard (Debra) Petersen of Park Rapids, MN; Ronald (Christine) Petersen of Hixon, TN; and Stanley Petersen of Burnsville, MN; her eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Ray and Herbert (Phyllis) Hiedeman.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ruth; her husband, Robert; her infant son, Roger; her great-grandson, Robbie Fink; her brothers, Arthur Jr., George, Russel, Harold, Earl and Richard Hiedeman; her sisters, Hazel Hasbargen and Cora Johnson; her nieces Mazie Jo, Mary Ann, and Marjorie; nephews Bruce and Joseph.
