Ethel West, 98 of Waconia, MN, formally of Fairmount, ND passed away on November 26, 2011 at Good Samaritan Center. The visitation is at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 29 from 4 to 8 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. The funeral is at First English Lutheran Church in Fairmount, ND on Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00pm, with Pastor Anthony Ahrendt officiating. The interment is at Fairmount Cemetery, Fairmount.
Ethel was born on January 7, 1913 to William and Anna Rossow in Campbell, MN She grew up and attended school in Campbell. After completing her education, she was employed as a housekeeper and also at Cudhay in Fairmount. Ethel was united in marriage to Kenneth West on September 14, 1933 at her parent's home in rural Campbell, MN. The couple farmed until they moved to rural Fairmount, Wilkin County, MN in 1941. They farmed there until 1966 when they traded the rural living for city life in Fairmount. They later moved to Osseo, MN where Kenneth was employed with Ryerson Steel for 7 years. In 1973, Ethel and Kenneth moved back to Fairmount where they lived out their retirement years. Kenneth passed away on November 6, 2000. Ethel moved to Norwood, MN to be with her daughter, Sylvia, and remained there for six and a half years until moving into the Lighthouse Assisted Living Center and then finally the Good Samaritan Center both in Waconia, MN.
Ethel loved to stay active and had many hobbies. She was passionate about gardening and tending to her flowers. She loved to bake and play cards and looked forward to her weekly visits to the community center. Crocheting and taking care of the neighborhood stray cats also kept her busy. She was a member of Ladies Aide of First English Lutheran Church, Kutzer Homemakers Club, and the Fairmount Bowling Team. Ethel treasured her family and took much care in making sure each gathering was special. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her and knew her.
Ethel is survived by her two sons Donovan (Carol) West of Monticello, MN and Gary (Rebecca) West of Andover, MN; her daughter Sylvia Olson of Norwood, MN; her daughter-in-law, Kathryn Calloway of Lebanon, OR; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Ethel is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; 2 sons Dennis and LaVerne; her parents; 6 brothers, Ed, Emil, Elmer, Leo, Adolph, and George; 2 sisters Ella Kube and Lena Sundea; her granddaughter, Donna and 2 great-grandsons.
