Gabriel Hermes

March 18, 1919 — January 15, 2014

Gabriel Leo Hermes, Sr., age 94, passed away on January 15, 2014 at home in Breckenridge, MN. His wife, Edna, was with him when he passed, as they both had wished. The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Breckenridge, with Pastor Rod Spidahl officiating. There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. The interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Breckenridge at a later date.

Gabe was born on March 18, 1919, to Frank and Maryanne (Minnehan) Hermes in Fairmount, North Dakota. He went to school in Fairmount, graduating in 1937. He enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and was discharged in 1946. Upon returning to ND, he joined the Fairmount American Legion Post #106, where he was a member for 60+ years.

Gabe married Edna Church on December 18, 1942. They farmed in ND until 1959 when they moved to Breckenridge, and Gabe began over the road truck driving.

In 1986, Gabe and Edna bought the Credit Bureau of Wahp-Breck, INC; they worked and ran the credit bureau until retirement in 2000.

At that time, they spent their days gardening, which included canning and pickling. Other hobbies they enjoyed together were playing cards, visiting friends and relatives, reading, and fishing.

Gabe is survived by his wife, Edna, Breckenridge; six of his seven children: Carol (Odell) Nelson, Perham, MN; Edna (Lee) Hingst, Silver Lake, MN; Frances (Dennis) Bitner, Sargent, TX; Calvin (Vicki) Hermes, Breckenridge; Gabe (Lori) Hermes, Wahpeton; Phillip (Jennifer) Hermes, Hoffman, MN; 22 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, AnneJean Hedemark, Victoria, MN; and a brother, Frank (Dorothy) Hermes, Hankinson, ND.

Gabe was preceded in death by a daughter, Lavonne (David) Boike; a granddaughter, Kari Hermes; and 3 grandsons: Seth Nelson, Jacob Bitner, and Brad Bitner.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Raphael Hermes, and Claire (Evelyn) Hermes; and four sisters: Lee (Bud) Hafner, Rhoda (Howard) Holm, Leola Whitaker, and Leora Herding.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the Milton C. Stevenson American Legion Post #106 in Fairmount, ND.
