Gary was born in Moorhead, MN, on September 9, 1938, one of 3 three sons born to Bernard and Vernice (Edenstrom) Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Wolverton, MN, graduating high school in 1956. Following high school, he enrolled in the Radio and Television Repair course at North Dakota State School of Science. He then enlisted in the North Dakota National Air Guard serving 6 years as a military policeman. On September 4, 1960, Gary was united in marriage to Janis Platt in Ada, MN. The couple lived in Wolverton until 1965, at which time they moved to Breckenridge. In the succeeding 29 years, Gary served the community of Breckenridge as a police officer with the Breckenridge PD, retiring in 1994.
Gary was an outdoor enthusiast. He spent much of his spare time hunting and fishing in the Red River Valley, enjoying both the serenity and the adrenaline of the sports. With a tongue-in-cheek he referred to himself as the "owner, founder, and chief jig maker of Evil Sven's Deadly Lures.com". Gary also had many creative hobbies that he enjoyed, but the crowning glory in his life was his family.
Gary has left behind a devoted family including his wife, Janis of 53 years, his children, Kathy (Tim) Schultz of Wolverton, MN, Karla (Brian) Soyring of Ogema, MN, Kenneth (Michelle) Johnson of Rosholt, SD, Karl (Janelle) Johnson of West Fargo, ND, Kristi (Troy Hazelton) Sprung of Fargo, ND, and Kyle (Leanna) Johnson of Abercrombie, ND; his 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother, James (Carol) Johnson of Pelican Rapids, MN; his sister-in-law, Sharon Johnson of Sierra Vista, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Vernice; and his brother, Douglas Johnson. Memorials preferred to Eagle Cemetery.
