History: Harold Phillip Monk was born August 23, 1923 at rural Barnesville, MN, the son of James and Hazel (Kemp) Monk. He grew up and attended school in that area and southwest of Rothsay, MN. Following his formal education he worked on the family farm. Harold entered the U. S. Army in April, 1945, and served during WWII in the European Theatre. He was a prison guard at Nuremberg Prison. Harold was separated on December 1, 1946. He returned to Staples, MN, where his parents lived then, and worked at various jobs in the area.
Harold was united in marriage to Esther Johnson on December 3, 1959 in Webster, SD. The couple made their home near Foxhome, MN. Harold worked at Swedberg Tree Service in Fergus Falls for 5 years, and then began working for Bunkowski Farms near Foxhome, MN, where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1999.
Harold was a member of the Rothsay American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed time spent with his family, and especially hunting, fishing, and trips to Wyoming and Montana with his sons.
