Hazel Zarling was born in Connelly Township near Breckenridge, MN, on May 25, 1918, the third of four daughters born to Albert and Nellie (Jacobs) Zarling. She attended a one-room country school near her home, after which she worked for various farmers. One magical night, Hazel attended a local dance where she met Charles "Chuck" Lambert, and it was love at first site. During the course of this evening, Chuck proposed marriage and Hazel accepted.
Hazel and Chuck began their married life together on May 7, 1938, in Minneapolis, MN. Chuck enlisted in the US Army and after he was deployed overseas, Hazel moved to back to Breckenridge where Chuck joined her upon his discharge from the military. They established their home and raised their 5 children in Breckenridge. She was actively involved in the Breckenridge Lutheran Church including Faith Care –N- Share, Meals on Wheels, and the BLC Quilting Circle. She loved to embroider, put together jigsaw puzzles, and solve word searches. Hazel had a soft spot in her heart for animals and made herself available to "pet sit" for her "grandpets". For 20 years, she proudly participated in the 3 mile St. Francis Walk/Run and usually ended up with the blue ribbon for her age category. Hazel hung up her sneakers when she turned 90. In 2014, she moved to an apartment in Alexandria to be closer to family. Reflective of her optimistic attitude and a vibrant zest for life, Hazel quickly formed many new friendships.
Hazel is survived by 2 daughters, Charlene (John) Benson of Edmond, OK and Nannette (Steven) Peters of Rochester, MN; her 2 sons, Douglas (Betty) Lambert of Glenwood, MN and Terry (Sheila) Lambert of Rochester, MN; her grandchildren, Jodi (Pete) Roth, Amy (David) Kuttler, Justin (Karen) Peters, Travis (Jen) Peters, Tana (Jeremy) Lambert Bates, Callie Lambert, and Ian Lambert; her great-grandchildren, Emma Kuttler, Eli Kuttler, Eva Peters, Henry Peters, Braeden Cox, Azley Peters, Jace Peters, and Zoe Bates; numerous nieces and nephews ; and friends in Alexandria and Breckenridge.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Nellie; her husband, Chuck; her daughter, Deborah; her sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Norma Prody, and Florence Drewlow.
