Helen was born to Lee and Helen (Rush) Griffin on October 31, 1916 in Miller SD. Her childhood was spent on a farm in McLeod, ND with five brothers and one sister. After graduating high school, Helen moved to Breckenridge, MN where she spent the rest of her life. She married Ervin Goerndt in 1947 and together they raised five children. She worked at Uncle Jim's Cafe as a waitress and baker. Erwin preceded her in death in 1970. After Ervin's death, Helen attended NDSSS and received her degree as an LPN. She worked for many years at St. Francis Hospital. Later, she was employed through the Breckenridge School District as their School Nurse. Another calling Helen took very seriously was her volunteer work. As a Red Cross volunteer, she was the 'go to' person when there was a death of a military family member. Helen worked tirelessly to make sure that they made it home for their loved one's funeral. She also dedicated many hours of story telling and reading to the elementary children of the community.
Helen is survived by her children David Goerndt of Orlando Florida; Janice Palmer of Dickinson, ND; Richard (Mary) Goerndt of Moorhead, MN; Susan Rumble of Prior Lake, MN; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents Lee and Helen Griffin; her husband Ervin Goerndt; her son Thomas, her sister Mary and five brothers Frances, Ray, Jack, Cleo and Donnie.
