Joseph Rick

Joseph Leo Rick, 77, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at CHI St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge. The visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00, on Friday, March 31, at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge. The visitation will continue at the funeral home, on Saturday, April 1, from 9:00 to 9:45 AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge. Father Joseph Backowski will be the Celebrant. The interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Joseph "Joe" Rick was born in Breckenridge, MN, on January 2, 1940, one of eleven children born to Ignatius and Lillian (Holecek) Rick. When Joe was six years old, the family moved to rural Wahpeton, ND, and he attended a one-room country school near Dwight. He finished his schooling in Wahpeton and then landed a job working on the Jim Kosek farm. In 1958, Joe proudly joined the United States Marine Corp where he was deployed to Taiwan. Upon his return in 1961, he joined in the Marine Reserve. He then worked under contract as an electrician in the building and maintenance of missile silos and electrical transmission lines in North Dakota. His propensity for electrical work was a family skill and he had the privilege of working alongside his brothers and nephews in their businesses. Over the years, his career path led him toward many valuable work experiences with various companies and job locations, all of which, he had built good personal relationships and respect with.
On July 6, 1967, Joe was united in marriage to Bernadette Althoff, in Wahpeton, ND. They made their home in Breckenridge and were blessed with two children, Larry and Lisa. Joe was an outdoor enthusiast and he shared that passion not only with his children but also with family friends. They would go on hunting and fishing expeditions which included the annual fishing opener on Ottertail Lake and pheasant hunting near Parkston, S.D. His jovial character was easy to be around. He was a good cook, a great story teller, and loved to open his home to family and friends. Joe loved a good card game and especially enjoyed Pinochle and Texas Hold'em Tournaments.
Joe will be missed by his children, Larry Rick of Breckenridge, MN and Lisa (Shane) Knudsvig of Milnor, ND, and their children, Kelsy (Tanner) Martinson, Tyler Knusvig , and Jordan Knudsvig all of Milnor; his five siblings, Dorothy Kotalik, Paul (Nona) Rick, John (Ginny) Rick, Rose Ann Brink, and Mary Jane (Fred) Crafton; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ignatius and Lillian; four brothers, Iggy, Edward, Michael, and Gerald; and one sister, Arlene Stockmoe.
