Lloyd Steussy

May 24, 1919 — May 14, 2015

Lloyd Henry Steussy, 95, of Breckenridge, MN, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015, at CHI St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge. The visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, on Saturday, May 23, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls, MN, followed by the funeral at 10:30 AM. The Reverend John Andrews will be officiating. The interment will be at Knollwood Cemetery in Fergus Falls.
Lloyd was born May 24, 1919, on a farm south of Foxhome, MN, the son of Alvin and Clara (Zentner) Steussy. He attended District 54 Country School and graduated high school from West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, MN. In February of 1941, he entered the Army Air Force at Fort Snelling. Basic Training was at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO. He was then transferred to Chanute Field in Rantoul, IL for airplane mechanics school. After this training was complete, he was stationed at Luke Field near Phoenix, AZ, repairing airplanes.
On May 15, 1943, Lloyd was united in marriage to Hazel Wille in Alexandria, MN, while on furlough. The couple moved to Luke Field Air Force Base and after a short while, Lloyd was transferred to Amarillo, TX to B-17 school. Upon completion of school, he was stationed at Hobbs, New Mexico to work on damaged war planes. He then went on to Biloxi, Mississippi as a B-17 specialist. In March of 1945, Lloyd joined the Navy Sailors on the USAT Cape Cleare as a Merchant Marine to the Island of New Guinea. There, they joined with hundreds of other ships and traveled to the Island of Leyte where he was briefly stationed. He then went to the Philippine Islands and later to the Island of IE near Okinawa, all the while servicing and repairing war planes. He ultimately was stationed at Subic Bay, and it was during these days that the Peace Treaty with Japan was signed. About two weeks after Armistice, Lloyd had enough points to go home. He was joined in Alexandria, MN, by his wife, Hazel and his first born son, Dale.
As a young family, the Steussy's settled on a farm southwest of Foxhome. Their beginnings were simple, starting out with one milk cow, a pregnant sow, and horses. That one cow flourished to 30 head of cattle, and as their farm grew so did their family. Lloyd's six children learned the value of hard work, the importance of family, and an obliging love for community. He was a member of Foxhome Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau; and a life member of American Legion Post 53 in Breckenridge, and VFW in Fergus Falls. He was the Foxhome Township Clerk for over 50 years as well as the Township Assessor. After selling his cattle in 1975, Lloyd and Hazel had more time to travel. They were blessed to have visited every state in the continental US and Alaska. They moved into Breckenridge in 2007.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 71 years, Hazel Steussy of Breckenridge; his sons, Dennis (Cinde) Steussy of Des Moines, WA, and Brad (Michele) Steussy of Breckenridge; his twin daughters, Paula (Wayne) Holznagel of Mitchell, SD, and Paulette Steussy of Fargo, ND; his daughters-in-law, Jan Steussy of Roseville, MN, and Patricia Steussy of Moorhead, MN; his 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Clara Steussy; his sons, Dale and Leslie Steussy; his grandson Ethanuel Holznagel; his brothers, Donald, Edwin, and Robert; his sisters, Lucille Dysart-Olson, Phyllis Belfour, Betty Lou Hammers, and Velma Anderson.
Lloyd has been entrusted to the care of Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home of Breckenridge.
