Mae Bartelson

Mae Viola Bartelson, 69, of Dent, MN, passed away on January 14, 2015, under the care of Lakeland Hospice, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN. The visitation will be at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge, MN, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 18, 2015, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 4:00. Officiating is Pastor Jule` Ballenger. Interment will be at a later date.
Mae was born December 25, 1945, in Staples, MN, youngest of nine children born to John and Mae (Rubel) Frikken. After graduating from Staples High School in 1963, she attended Cosmetology School at Wadena Tech in Wadena, MN. Following her schooling, Mae obtained employment at Hope's Beauty Salon in Detroit Lakes, MN. On April 7, 1965, she met the love of her life, Duane Bartelson. Then, on August 7th of the same year, they were united in marriage near Pelican Lake, MN. The couple resided in the Detroit Lakes area. Then, in 1975, they moved to the Wolverton, MN area where Mae became a First Responder with the Wolverton Rescue Squad. She was also an energetic Cub Scout Leader and a pitcher for the Wolverton Women's Softball team. In 1998, Mae and Duane moved to Dent, MN, where they have since resided.
Mae effortlessly accomplished sewing, quilting, and knitting interspersed with the daily endeavors of raising her 9 children. She loved cooking for large groups, canning, gardening, and Diet Pepsi. She enjoyed viewing nature's activities right outside her window, and was attentive to the care of her house plants as well. As an avid reader, Mae loved a good Harlequin Romance novel. She liked the challenge of solving crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Mae was a diligent collector of hummingbirds, vintage oil lamps, and bells. Excursions to the casino, Sunday family drives, and activities with the grandchildren, were among her favorite things to do.
Mae is survived by her husband of 49 years, Duane; her 9 children, Duane, Jr. (Pat) of Conroe, TX, Tami (Darrell) Hasse of Dent, MN, Daniel (Nickie) of Barnesville, MN, Drew (Katie) of Fargo, ND, Trudi (Dean) Bellmore of Wahpeton, ND, Toni (Brian) Cam of Dawson, MN, David of Fargo, Derik (Brittany) of Fargo, and Douglas of Fargo; 22 grandchildren, Damian, Megan, Lexi, Zoey, Rique (Stephanie), Tiffani (Brad O'Dell), James, Jr., Amanda (Derek), Dallas, Taylor, Emma, Zachery, Jake, Emilee, Dorian, Allyssa, Parker, Alexis, Haylie, Jaxson, Connor, and Devon; her 4 (and 2 on the way) great-grandchildren; her brother, James (Lois) Frikken of Missouri; her four-legged friends, Chico and Cookie.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mae; her siblings, William, Edward, Bert, Elizabeth Morrison, John, Dick, and Lucy, in infancy; several in-laws; and her four-legged friends, Tinker(23 years old) and Gidget (17 years old).
