She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Anthony's of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo, ND. Margaret attended St. Anthony's grade school, Fargo Central and North Dakota State Agricultural College (now NDSU). She worked in Washington, D.C. during World War II, as well as for Pillsbury in Minneapolis, later in Fargo for International Harvester and the Veterans Administration. One noteworthy experience among many took place in 1969, when she had tea with the Queen of England in Buckingham Palace.
She and Richard enjoyed living in Campbell until 1977, when they moved to Ottertail Lake, MN to spend their summers. Winters were spent leisurely in Manzanillo, Mexico until 1991, and thereafter in Palm Desert, CA. In May of 2010, Margaret and Richard moved into the Waterford in Fargo where they enjoyed making new friends and renewing old acquaintances. Margaret was characterized by her ability to elicit laughter. Along with her husband she was a marvelous hostess. She always took great pride in not only her immediate but also her extended family and greatly enjoyed talking with them.
Margaret is survived by her husband Richard M. Smith of Fargo, ND, her children: Kevin (Barbara) Smith of Lake Ozark, MO; Marcia (Dean) Abernethy of Atlanta, GA; and Richie (Ann) Smith of Wahpeton, ND; her sisters-in-law Shirley (Casey) Jones; Mara (Paul) Jones; Patsy (Mickey) Jones; and Marilou (Lewis) Johnson; her grandchildren, Jonathan Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Lauren Smith of Lonetree, CO, Kevin Abernethy of Atlanta, GA, Patrick (Erin) Abernethy of Atlanta, GA, Anne Abernethy of Athens, GA, Kelly Smith of Highlands Ranch, CO, Kathleen Smith of Fargo, ND, Kierann Smith of Stanford, CA, and Conor Smith of Shanghai, China.
