Mary Beth Gutwasser was born on March 24, 1943, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the only daughter born to Leonard and Myrtle (Owen) Gutwasser. The family moved to Michigan for a short period of time before settling in Wheaton, MN, where Mary Beth graduated high school in 1961. Following high school, she attended Moorhead State Teacher's College and graduated in 1965. Her teaching career began in the Breckenridge School District teaching first grade. On June 30, 1966, Mary Beth was united in marriage to David "Jim" Manock in Wahpeton, ND. They made their home in Breckenridge where they were blessed with three boys.
Over the 34 years that Mary Beth taught first grade, a unique tradition that she carried out in her classroom was putting on bright red lipstick to plant a kiss on a student's cheek for their birthday. She was delighted when former students stopped by to greet her. When Mary Beth retired from teaching, she treated herself a purple Chevy Caprice Classic.
Mary Beth loved to travel throughout the United States, but especially memorable for her were her trips to Europe. She had a heart of gold and was an ever-present figure in her sons and her grandchildren's lives. It was the simple things in life that brought her joy: her dog, Cindy "Snoops", clipping coupons, summers, spending days at the pool with her grandkids, sipping on her homemade iced Sun Tea, and going out to eat, especially to the Red Lobster or for Chinese food. She was a dedicated "Days of our Lives" and "Golden Girls" fan, but then again, loved to relax with a good book. She received such gratification in gardening, particularly her stunning roses, and looked forward to her weekly get-together with her retired teacher friends.
Mary Beth will be missed by her husband of 50 years, Jim; her three sons, Michael (Stacee) Manock of Wahpeton, ND, and their children, Zachary and Ethan; Mark (Bridget) Manock of Scottsdale, AZ, and their children, Luke, Matthew and Nicholas; and Paul (Sara) Manock, of Fergus Falls, MN, and their children, Katie (Jason) Osvold of Fargo, ND and Brooklyn; her brother, Charles Gutwasser of St. Cloud, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Myrtle.
