Nanci Kay Tobias

Nanci Kay Walter Tobias passed away on August 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Nanci was born on February 16, 1950, in Berwyn, Illinois, to Kathleen and Herbert Walter. She was raised in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and graduated from Evergreen Park High School in 1968. Nanci attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.

In July 1970, Nanci married Randy Tobias. Together, Nanci and Randy made their home in Breckenridge, Minnesota, for nearly 50 years, where they raised their two daughters and created many cherished memories. After choosing to spend the early years of her daughters' lives at home with them, Nanci became the supervising librarian at the Breckenridge Public Library, a position she held for 29 years. She enjoyed many aspects of her job, but the part that brought her the most joy was working with children. Storytime at the library, the summer reading program, and countless teen programs are fond memories held by so many in the Breckenridge community.

In addition to her position at the library, Nanci was actively involved in the Wilkin County DFL and was instrumental in helping establish the local chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Nanci was a voracious reader, loved holidays, and never forgot the birthday of a loved one. After retirement, Nanci and Randy moved to Moorhead in 2020 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Family was the cornerstone of Nanci's life. She was a devoted grandma who cherished every opportunity to spend time with the ones she loved most. Her "best grandma hugs" will be deeply missed.

Nanci is survived by her husband, Randy; her daughters, Stacey Tobias (Jacob Ell) and Courtney Tobias (Dom Izzo); her grandchildren, Brynley Ell and Jackson Izzo; one brother, Lawrence Walter; her nieces Kelley (Tony) Bailey and Emily (Brian) Veraa, and her nephew Alex Walter; and numerous extended family and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen and Herbert Walter.

A funeral service will be held at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
