Owen Shelstad, 73 of Fargo, ND died at the VA Medical Center in Fargo on November 8, 2010 surrounded by his family. The funeral is Saturday November 13 at 3:00 pm. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN with Pastor Gary Gottfried officiating. The visitation is Saturday November 13, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment is at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND.
Owen was born on September 16, 1937 to Oscar and Florence (Mikkelson) Shelstad in Breckenridge, MN. Owen grew up in Wahpeton, ND attending their schools and graduating in 1955. In January of 1956, he entered the US Navy and served during the Viet Nam conflict for 1 year. In his 20 years of service in the military, Owen had been stationed at several military bases throughout the United States and overseas. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Axtmann when he was stationed in Illinois and married her on August 26, 1961 in Wilmette, IL. As a military family, they raised their 2 daughters in various cities all over the US.
After his discharge in 1975, he returned to Wahpeton and attended NDSCS and worked as a Richland County Dispatcher. He later became a Patrol Deputy Sheriff for Sheriff Harlan Muehler. Once he retired from the sheriff's department, he worked security for the US Marshals at the US Court House in Fargo, ND.
Owen was a member of the Wahpeton American Legion and Disabled Vets of Fargo. In his spare time he enjoyed going to the FM Redhawks baseball games, traveling to Medora and going to Beth's family home in Chicago. He loved being on his computer, he treasured the time spent with his family, particularly his grandchildren. His dog, Saddle, was his constant companion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Owen is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Beth" Shelstad of Fargo, ND; his 2 daughters, Robin (Kent) Thoreson of New Effington, SD; Kimberly Hernandez of Yucca Valley, CA; his grandchildren, Alexandra (Joel) Farren of Fargo, ND and Colby, Ezri, and Gunnar Thoreson; his 9 sponsored children, Erick Wanjohi Murithi of Kenya; Nana Toure of Mali; Thi Viet Nguyen of Viet Nam; Nimasha S. Nuwarannage of Sri Lanka; David Hategekimana of Rwanda; Nabil Estephan of Lebanon; Awa Toure of Mali, Mouna Mint Sidi of Mauritania and Guntur Chahyo Laksono Sugeng of Indonesia
