Richard "Dick" was born on February 26, 1935, in Dwight, ND, one of eight children born to Otto and Martha (Doleshy) Gutzmer. When he was a young child, his family moved to a farm near Everdell, MN. After his formal education, Dick helped his family on the farm before entering the military. He served his country in the Korean Conflict as a soldier in the US Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Minnesota and began a 20+ year career at Peter J. Schweitzer –Kimberly Clark Corporation (Schweitzer's) in Breckenridge. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Ebel on October 8, 1960, in rural Lidgerwood, ND. The couple raised their three children in Breckenridge. Dick took an early retirement (1987) from Schweitzer's and went to work for M & M Farms (Greg and Rob Meyer farm) for several years. In the early 1990's, he joined the maintenance staff at Wahpeton Park Department, and then he retired in 2006, due to health reasons.
Dick led a straightforward life characterized by hard work and a love for tradition. He had a soft spot for what inspired the "good ole" days including John Wayne Westerns and old time Country Music, like Porter Wagoner. He was a devoted father and connected grandfather and always looked forward to attending the grandchildren's activities. Dick left behind a legacy of integrity, work ethic, and a quiet love that will be missed immensely by his friends and family.
Dick is survived by his special friend, Lois Hermes of Breckenridge; two sons, Kim (Lori Kutzer) Gutzmer of Mantador, ND, and his children, Jeremy Phelps, Jolean Sylvia and Brent Phelps, and their mother, Jerrilyn Cain; Jai Gutzmer of Fargo, ND; his daughter, Roxanne (Greg) Meyer of Wahpeton, ND, and their children, Casey, Kiley, and Jadey; his seven great-grandchildren; his three sisters, Leona Walker of Bismarck, ND, Ruth Ostern of Wahpeton, ND, and Carol (Deak) Deaton of Prineville, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Martha; his wife Myrtle (1983); and his four brothers, Eugene, Gordon, Warren "Pete", and Dennis Gutzmer.
