Rolf John Shelstad, 56 of Lake Park, MN, formerly Kenyon, MN, died Sunday April 7, 2013 at his home due to complications from diabetes and pneumonia. The funeral will be 10:30, Saturday, April 13 at Breckenridge Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Manning officiating. The visitation will be Friday, April 12, from 5:00 to 8:00PM with a prayer service at 7:00PM at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, and again one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Vukku Cemetery in Foxhome, MN.
Rolf was born December 12, 1956 in Faribault, MN to John and Norma (Twait) Shelstad. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Kenyon. He attended the Kenyon school where he participated in football and baseball. He was a member of the Kenyon American Legion baseball team in two State Legion Tournaments. He was also active in the FFA Chapter where he held local and district offices, a state VP office, and was a winner of several FFA awards. After graduating in 1975, he attended the University of MN. Rolf was employed at Metal Sales Corporation in Rogers MN. In 2002, he was transferred to Detroit Lakes, MN where he was in charge of opening a new plant for Metal Sales. At the time of his death he held the position of Administrative Manager in the company.
Rolf had a passion for the outdoors but his true north was hunting and fishing. From "ice off" and opening fishing weekend, to retreating the docks in the fall, Rolf was at the family cabin on Ottertail Lake every possible weekend. Countless happy memories dawned as family filled the cabin to overflowing. The hustle and bustle of the cabin could always be silenced by the calm of the lake, a fishing rod and a companion or two-usually one of his many nieces or nephews. Rolf will be remembered as a trusted friend, a kind and generous uncle and brother, and a beloved son.
Rolf is survived by his parents John and Norma; his sisters Koreen (Dale) Harstad of Dickinson, TX, Kirsten Shelstad of Albuquerque, NM, Kaia (Bruce) Bergeson of Montevideo, MN, Karla (Jeff) Siem of Falcon Heights, MN; his 3 godchildren, Brett Bergeson, Jill (Jeremie) Oliphant, and Kaaren (Paddy) Magliolo; and his brother-in-law Scott Hilleren of Duluth.
He was preceded in death by his sister Kerry Hilleren and his brother Daniel Shelstad.
