, MN, formerly of Milnor, ND passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral services will be on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Milnor Lutheran Church, Milnor, ND with Pastor Curt Larson officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, July 31, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, MN. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church in Milnor. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, ND.
Pallbearers will be John Carlson, James Carlson, James Martinson, Brian Wanek, Trevor Martinson, Tanner Martinson.
Viola was born September 15, 1920, the daughter of Oscar and Della (Olson) Nelson at Milnor, ND, where she grew up and attended school. Following graduation she continued living on the home farm until marrying Clifford Carlson on August 10, 1938 in Milnor. The couple made their home on a farm near Milnor until 1947, when they moved into Milnor. They owned and operated Carlson Confectionary Store and later a jewelry store there.
In 1967 they moved to Wahpeton, ND and Viola worked as a teacher’s assistant at Circle of Nations School. Cliff preceded her in death in December, 1983. Viola continued living in Wahpeton and in 1985 married Herb Gast from Wahpeton. He preceded her in death in April, 1996. Viola became a resident of Pioneer Senior Cottages in June, 2006, where she has since resided.
Vi enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and music, and enjoyed helping others. She was a member of the Milnor Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Wahpeton.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Judy Wanek, Campbell, MN, and her special friend, John Korinek; her son, Dennis Carlson, Campbell, MN; her eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; her brothers, Herman (Beverly) Nelson, Hinkley, MN, and James (Donna) Nelson, Inver Grove Heights, MN; her sister-in-law, Elsie (Robert) Nickey, Mesa, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Della Nelson; her first husband, Clifford Carlson; her second husband, Herb Gast; her son, Curtis Carlson; her grandson, Randy Carlson; her brother, Kenneth Nelson; her son-in-law, Cecil Wanek.
