Walter Herbert Wanek, 83 of Doran MN, passed away at St. Francis Nursing Home on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.Visitation will be at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home on Friday, January 21 from 5 to 7 pm with a prayer service at 7. The funeral will be on Saturday, January 22 at 11 am at Joseph Vertin & Sons Funeral Home. Father Kenneth Popp is officiating. Pallbearers are Walter's grandchildren.
Walter was born July 12, 1927 in Fairmount, ND to Charles and Leona (Kutzer) Wanek. He grew up on the family farm and attended Doran School and took courses in sheet metal and electrical at NDSSS. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Church. Walt served in the Army/Air Force in communications, stationed in Hawaii. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2766 in Breckenridge.
On May 1, 1950 Walter married Betty McManigle, later moving to the family farm to raise their family. They attained Century Farm status in 2006. In addition to farming, Walt worked for Great Northern Railway, Osborne-McMillan elevator and did construction work. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as telling tales and cracking jokes with family and friends.
Walter is survived by his wife Betty of 60 years and their seven children; Patty Johnson, Alexandria, MN; Janie Wanek, Valley City, ND; Mary (Tim) Evenson, Linda Wanek (Ron Berg), all Doran; Karen Wanek, Robert (Kim) Wanek, all Breckenridge; Jennifer Wanek, Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren, Tate (Jodi), Brett, and Trent Johnson, Jessica, Michael (Brandi), and Vanessa Evenson, Robert and Carter Wanek; and six great-grandchildren, Isaak and Ian Johnson, Brooklyn and Sierra Evenson, and Dayne and Owen Evenson; his brother Don (Bernice) Wanek, Doran; and two sisters, Marie Waldhauser, Lino Lakes, MN and Margaret (Bob) Fischer of Sun Valley, CA, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Ann (Lou) Scarella.
