Breckenridge, MN

Wayne Joseph Leinen, 82, of Breckenridge, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, in Fargo, North Dakota.

In celebration of Wayne's remarkable life, family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, North Dakota. A funeral service will follow at noon. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Breckenridge, Minnesota.

Wayne was born on August 9, 1943, in Breckenridge to Irvin "Irv" and Elizabeth "Betty" (Pausch) Leinen. He was the second oldest of nine children and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1961.

Wayne spent more than thirty-five years working for the Breckenridge Public Utilities, primarily at the water treatment plant, until his retirement in 1999. He was known for his strong work ethic, practical knowledge, and willingness to lend a hand whenever something needed fixing. Beyond his full-time career, he operated a small engine repair business for more than fifty-five years, helping countless neighbors keep their mowers, snowblowers, and equipment running. He also spent over thirty harvest seasons driving beet truck.

Wayne and the love of his life, Barbara Joan Leinen, shared 60 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on family, hard work, and unwavering devotion to one another.

Wayne was a proud father to Darin (Colette) Leinen, Tracy (Kevin Jacobson) McKinnon, and Corey (Shayla) Leinen. He was a loving grandfather to Krista, Alison (Chris), Justin (Marissa), Tanner, Bryce, Brady, and Abby, and a cherished great-grandfather to Theo, Vera, Kansas, Colby, and Camden.

Family was the center of Wayne's world. Some of his happiest memories were made at the family cabin on Marion Lake, where he spent more than 30 years enjoying fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and countless hours outdoors with his children and grandchildren. When he wasn't on the lake or in the woods, he could usually be found in his shop, tinkering with an engine, repairing equipment, or figuring out how to fix just about anything.

Wayne was also known for his love of keeping a beautiful lawn. His beloved Toro mower was rarely idle, and many would say that few stripes in town were straighter or more admired. He took pride in a job well done, whether it was maintaining a yard, repairing an engine, or helping a friend. A true roughneck at heart, Wayne wasn't afraid of hard work and always preferred doing things himself. Beneath his rugged exterior was a generous man who deeply loved his family and quietly cared for those around him.

Wayne is survived by his three children and their families; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings Pat, Diane, Kathleen, Irvin, Kenneth, Alice, Marie, and Annette; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan; his parents, Irvin and Betty Leinen; and his parents-in-law.

Wayne's family will remember him for his steady presence, his mechanical know-how, his love of the outdoors, and the lessons he taught simply by example. While the mower may finally be parked and the tools laid to rest, the legacy of his hard work, kindness, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew and loved him.

"The lawn may grow again, but the man who cared for it so faithfully will never be forgotten."
